Unlike a siege, here you need to not only control the actions of your combat troops, but also closely monitor that new participants do not enter the battle. How to build this fortress? Very simple – you just need to have wood and some stone with you. Don’t be afraid, you don’t have to do the construction yourself – leave that to the workers, who need to be hired and settled in your home. In order to understand how useful you were in the war, each guild member can look at the conquest statistics. The guild screen has an active status log and statistics for each member. Leaders of large communities will be able to immediately identify players who are idle during battle. This window will serve as a good indicator of how effective your tactics are.

So, Half-Life is a great game in general, which turned out to be a revolutionary event for the shooter genre in particular, and for some people it has become an icon of interactive entertainment. Let’s try to fantasize a little on the topic: “What if there was no Half-Life”… Then none of us would sit for hours in smoky clubs playing Counter-Strike. Portal, which served as a detonator for experimental gaming developments, would not have seen the light of day. In 2008, the world would have done without the multiplayer revelation in the form of Left 4 Dead… This list can be continued, but why?? After all, in November 1998 we met Gordon Freeman. And now, a group of his loyal fans is engaged in a noble cause – creating a project Black Mesa, ready to remind us where it all began.

In northwestern Oklahoma (near the New Mexico and Colorado borders) is the Black Mesa Mesa. A deserted volcanic plateau is an excellent place to create a secret underground laboratory under the patronage of the US government. But, as everyone has long known, such undertakings rarely end in positive results. An experiment with a particle accelerator, when analyzing a certain non-standard sample, did not go quite as expected, which led to very unforeseen consequences.

The second part of the adventures of the famous nuclear scientist was abandoned by the atmosphere that reigned in the Black Mesa laboratories. After all, then the hero was not the people’s savior and a universal celebrity, but was presented as a staff employee, first of all saving his own, excuse me, ass. And all this at a time when the brutal Quake 2 was considered the standard of the genre. Creation Valve gave new sensations from playing 3D-action. This game was a drama about human survival, not an action movie, as everyone is used to.

Developers from Black Mesa Team obviously didn’t like the remake Half-Life: Source, released in 2004 and representing a banal technical update of the original. And even then a group of enthusiasts led Carlos Montera began work on its own modification to correct historical injustice. Over these five years, their project has gone through a lot – countless hacker attacks on the site, hacking of the forum and leak of the alpha version. But despite this, Black Mesa turned out to be a tough nut to crack, stayed afloat and gradually began to reach the finish line.

Remake is probably the wrong word. More appropriate in this situation is "restoration". Only the visual and technological side of the issue is undergoing a total redesign. Familiar locations will take on a fresh and full look, the game will have “correct” physics, and the environment will become much more interactive. The construction of levels, opponents, weapons and general game moments are carefully transported without drastic changes.

The developers are faced with almost a jewel-like task, in which it is necessary to transfer the gameplay of Half-Life from the late nineties to our century, add the necessary modern features and not destroy its spirit. Almost under a microscope, defects and roughness are revealed from the general scheme, which are corrected. The original artificial intelligence, which even now looks quite decent, is also being modernized, as is the music and sound design. In addition to all this, it is planned to introduce the currently popular cooperative mode.

For those who, due to their youth, did not catch the legendary game, this is a great chance to catch up. And representatives of the older generation certainly will not be able to resist visiting the familiar corridors of the research center with a nostalgic smile on their lips. And, by the way, let’s hope that in ten to fifteen years there will again be people who are ready to redo the already Black Mesa.

Behind the name Blacklight two whole games are hidden. One of them would look ideal as part of the current KRI – an online casual action game that works according to the long-established principle of “download, install, shoot and forget”: simplified graphics, forced numerous concessions to make life easier for the younger generation of gamers and absolute unattractiveness for lovers of expensive products. Blacklight: Tango Down – already directly “our” candidate. That’s what we’ll talk about.

At first, the abundance of high-tech, but little bordering on reality, wonders simply leads to philistine reasoning that the developers have a rich and inflamed imagination on the corresponding militaristic theme. That’s how it is, by and large. It’s important to note now that “Zombies” had a hand in the development of America’s Army. And this already changes things significantly. In the game, which almost replaces the heartless peddlers of agendas in the United States, they work only with a real-life product. This means that “homemade” M16 (17, 18, 19…) with modified optics and only a general silhouette similar to the real prototype have no place here.

Tactics here receive the lion’s share of attention and time, but you shouldn’t expect the seriousness of SWAT 4. Zombie Studios, like GRIN, just wants to give us a great opportunity to be “cool soldiers with nanoguns”. The main combat unit in Blacklight – a squad of four fighters. All tactics are described in just a couple of sentences. Firstly, these are minimally coordinated actions of fighters within the team – the multi-level gameplay announced by the developers will come in very handy here. Partners can not only look out and hide behind shelters, but also jump over railings, climb ladders and, probably, help their comrades.

To gracefully highlight the “verticality” of the gameplay, the “zombies” deliberately equipped snipers (just imagine!) jetpacks – just like in StarCraft 2, for which the colleagues of the author of these lines have already made almost a dozen Live broadcasts. If there really are plans for something like this to be introduced in the US armed forces (we’re talking about rocket packs now, of course), then an incredible future awaits us.

So far the impression from the first acquaintance with Blacklight can spoil one significant circumstance. With all our respect for the declared weapons from the future, rocket packs and the opportunity to try on a suit that is not inferior in its properties to Solid Snake’s OctoCamo, this game simply cannot be called original and unique. So far it looks and is perceived as a very good compilation of alien, but best ideas that the action genre has absorbed in general, and semi-tactical battles in particular. Quite literally, the game from the creators of the interactive “Saw” is like a free mix of “Warfighter” and a faceless set of futuristic shooters.

Blackguards 2: Review

Blackguards was a largely literal, accurate translation of the rules and principles of the tabletop system The Dark Eye into the language of a computer RPG. A squad of heroes of different races and classes traveled across the map and took part in turn-based battles, during the breaks being distracted by walking around the shops in search of new equipment. Everything focused specifically on complex tactical battles, offering a fairly linear plot and rare side quests. In the sequel there are even more battles, they are more difficult, and additional tasks in the usual sense have disappeared completely. Nevertheless, it became better to play, it became more fun to play..

Divorce the Aventurian way

First of all, this is due to the fact that the plot here is more interesting and darker – it more than justifies the name of the game and the “dark” reputation of The Dark Eye setting itself. We again oppose the treacherous Marwan, who survived the events of the first part, but now we are led into battle by his half-mad wife, devoted to him. And she literally has spiders in her head and a scary mask on her face.

Under the leadership of Cassia, we are reconquering her native lands, seized by her evil husband. In addition to three old acquaintances from the first part – Nurim, Zurbaran and Takate – she is helped in this by mercenaries from the Silent Legion, ready to plunder cities and make bloody sacrifices. And Cassia herself does not stand on ceremony when choosing methods to achieve her goals, although she herself periodically does not really understand what they are. In general, there is more intrigue and reasons to follow the plot, and the dialogues and characters are written better.

There are options..

Nonlinearity has also increased. Firstly, the structure of the gameplay itself now encourages variability, which is already more reminiscent of a strategy on a global map than a classic RPG. On this very map we choose which of Marwan’s possessions to capture next: it could be a city, a fortress, the palace of his minion, and so on. We captured three points – we are preparing to repel a counterattack on one of the points. And so – the whole game. We are not given any side quests in the cities – here you will no longer meet suffering local residents.

However, this did not make it any more boring – quite the contrary. Instead of helping inconsolable mothers who have lost their children in the forest, and lazy traders who urgently need to convey something to someone, we are engaged in much more interesting, strategic (and truly non-linear) planning. All points on the map are connected by roads, and they branch and lead in different directions. Accordingly, you are free to follow different routes, focusing on what bonuses each captured city gives – these could be advantages to the characteristics of your mercenaries, new goods in the store, and even a chance to get a new recruit into the ranks of the Silent Legion, for example a mage or an assassin.

Try to negotiate, threaten, make a deal, or offer to influence the prisoner to one of the three other main characters. In general, situations of moral choice in Blackguards 2 also more – at some point, say, you will have to decide whether to allow mercenaries to plunder cities or not.

More accessible, but not easier

And yet the main dish Blackguards 2 What remains are tactical battles and everything connected with them – “leveling up” and selecting equipment. There is different news on this matter.

The range of weapons and armor is quite scarce and does not change for almost half the game. The role-playing system has become simpler, departing somewhat from the canons of The Dark Eye: there are fewer character characteristics, and they almost do not participate in “leveling up”. Some skills are frankly useless, but other spells, on the contrary, are many times more effective than others.

And yet, you can still spend hours on the screen for distributing points between different skills – competent “pumping” is very important here. The same is with mercenaries: you cannot independently improve their “skills” and select equipment for them – and yet the player directly influences the process of development of “soldiers of fortune”.

While defending your cities, you can set different traps. And in general, defending here is easier than attacking, although the authors promised the opposite.

Mercenaries are mainly involved in the defense of your possessions; in addition, they can support the main characters in some battles – and you decide for yourself which class fighters to take with you (spaces are limited). So, the more often you choose, for example, an archer or swordsman, the more powerful all representatives of this class become.

Fight with a condition

But the battles themselves have definitely become better and more difficult. The maps are more spacious, they have more interactive objects, traps and, accordingly, interesting opportunities – when, for example, we overwhelm enemies with boxes, release aggressive animals from cages, drop some boards using a winch, or lure the enemy into a kind of minefield.

In addition, in the second part we are much more often asked not just to kill all opponents, but to fulfill some special conditions – collapse a bridge, break five crystals, or free prisoners and escape. Sometimes you even have to solve puzzles involving levers and sharp bars that you can lure enemies onto. True, sometimes the authors go too far and force us to replay battles over and over again: try breaking the same five crystals and leaving alive in conditions where you are attacked by crowds of huge immortal lizards with the support of powerful magicians!

Finally, special monsters appeared, the creations of Marwan’s minions. These creatures are not just very big – they can jump and fly across half the map, knocking down everyone who gets in their way. And if at first we only have to hit them in the face, then later we will be allowed to use special melodies to control the monsters.

Each point on the map has its own level of difficulty, so it’s better not to go into some places for the time being.

Claims to Blackguards 2 differ little from those we presented in the first part. Sometimes the game still slips into repetition of the same thing, there are technical flaws and problems with balance: some battles are overcomplicated, others, on the contrary, are too simple (although there are many fewer of them). The font is still catastrophically small and poses a real threat to the eyes. And in fights there is still no way to increase the speed of movement of the fighters, which is why the fights seem drawn out. But overall, the second part is a step forward in almost all respects. So we’re looking forward to seeing what the next experiment will be Daedalic Entertainment in the role-playing field.

Pros: darker plot; complex and interesting battles; the gameplay has become less linear; strategic elements have appeared.

Blacksad Arctic Nation.

Making the average person think is not an easy task.
A person can read, but not everyone can understand what they read.
A separate milestone of art is the ability to elevate a serious problem to the level of absurdity. Thus, a complex, difficult topic becomes simple, and sometimes even funny.
So the creators of the graphic novel Blacksad, having introduced the reader to the main character and his habitat, are in a hurry to raise serious topics.

In the second volume of Blacksad, a whole layer of questions comes to light:
hypocrisy, racism, family values.

In this incredible waltz of ideology and personal motives, the entire absurdity of what is happening in the comic is revealed, and what seems to be the main problem turns out to be just a screen hiding a more complex plot.

BlackGuards 2: revue
